Too Darn Hot / The Way You Look Tonight

I have something in common with most Los Angelenos: I was born and raised somewhere else. While I can think of many reasons to move from my hometown, Cincinnati, the main thing that caused me to settle down in Los Angeles was the weather.

Ja-Da

My story begins on the drive home from a recent dinner date with Jada. I was playing my favorite big band version of "On the Sunny Side of the Street" in the car, thoroughly enjoying the tune. I glanced over at Jada, expecting to see a big grin at the circus-like interpretation of the song. Imagine my surprise to see tears streaming down her plump little cheeks!

My Favorite Things.

As I recover from my live jazz addiction, I am becoming more and more reliant upon my recorded music collection to get me through the tough spots. In an example of perfect timing, I have a new friend who challenged me to come up with my 10 favorite jazz tunes. I agreed, provided that he'd respond in turn.

How Insensitive.

This addiction has been with me for a long time, but I faced it head-on a few weeks ago, when, between the Newport Beach Jazz Party and a local performance, I attended 20 sets of jazz in a 4 day period. TWENTY. In four days. This, friends, is what one might call a bender.

Sophisticated Lady

Being a huge jazz fan is a wonderful thing. It ensures that I will have something to do on any given weeknight in Los Angeles because there are gigs aplenty. It guarantees that I will have the best cocktail party music on hand at all times, which makes me an asset to my social circle. Being a jazz fan even gives me a sense of culture and sophistication that only those refined enough to be patrons of the arts can appreciate. Or so I thought.
