Chico Hamilton - Hamiltonia (Joyous Shout!)

In music an artist can be timeless in one of two ways. The first is to create a work in which time and repeated listenings do not diminish its power. Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue (Columbia 1959) and John Coltrane's A Love Supreme (Impulse! 1965) immediately come to mind.
The other way is for the artist to be not ahead of the curve of trends, but completely outside of it all....
NEA Jazz Master (2004) and Kennedy Center living legend (2007) Chico Hamilton is such an artist.

Crescent: John Coltrane Quartet

Recorded around the same time, both offer up a sonic journey of amazing emotional power.

Review: Charles Mingus - Mingus Dynasty

This is one of my favorite Mingus albums. I got this when it first came out on CD years ago. It has since been remastered and the sound fidelity is drastically improved. Also, many of the tracks have restored solos. These unedited versions are appearing for the first time.

Infinite Search - the Max Perkoff Band

While I take full advantage of the great jazz available with its lineup of legends, lately I have been also looking toward the future. A little game a bunch of us play is "who will we be seeing in concert ten, twenty, thirty years down the line, when all the remaining legends are gone?"
With this in mind, I have been checking out some of the younger players on the scene.
