What's Wrong with Jazz Today?

Aside from the teeny-tiny print on CD covers that we can't read without a magnifying glass, and the ever-present loud talkers who show up at many live performances and ignore the music all night long, there's not much wrong with jazz these days for most dedicated fans, listeners and collectors.

Are Liner Notes Really Necessary?

Not yes, but hell yes. If you want to create a product that folks will keep, then accurate liner notes and comprehensive credits have to be included with the album. The liner notes should indicate who plays on which tracks, who wrote the music, when was it recorded, what the leader is trying to accomplish with his album, and how it relates to the leader's past and projected projects. All too often, liner notes are thrown together too quickly and pertinent information is left out.

Show Me the Money

Why is it so many of us in the business of jazz performance, education, marketing and journalism are underpaid and overworked? Is it because there's not enough profit? Is it because the supply and demand don't match up equitably? Or is it because the field itself discourages a profit?
