To be truthful, I'm going through a change in my perspective... I'm getting tired of crappy gigs! Gigs that are in a cold room, with no people listening, a bad piano, and no musical magic. I really want magic more than anything now.

Comments:

After a long time of not singing I am now poised to start singing again...putting some musicians together, looking for places to play, doing it. pushing through my laziness and fears of crappy gigs, people not listening, nobody there...no money in it. So your article come at a PERFECT time. Ain't that always the way. There are no accidents. Thank you for your regular emails...which directed me to your blog. Am going to start showing up on Wednesdays and putting it out there. Like you say so well, It IS who we are and we HAVE to do it for our happiness. Pure and simple. And if the audience is small and not listening, you ride on the joy of the experience of making great music...and singing to that one person who is listening. Bless you.

Sure, I've had my share of those crappy gigs - but I've come to the conclusion that you have to MAKE your own audience. In other words, have a good E-mail distribution list, snd possibly an effective Web site. Most of these club owners expect you to promote an audience for them anyway. At least they'll be listening to your art. And, if the piano sucks (like it usually does) bring your OWN keyboard.

quoteMy life is music, and in some vague, mysterious and subconscious way, I have always been driven by a taut inner spring which has compelled me to almost compulsively reach for perfection in music, often -- in fact mostly -- at the expense of everything else in my life.unquote

RIMSHOTS

A young child says to his mother, "Mom, when I grow up I think I'd like to be a musician." She replies, "Well honey, you know you can't do both."
